How I Became Me

Ever since I was able to comprehend that adults “were supposed to work most of their lives,” I knew that I wanted to help people in my work. I grew up very close to my Nana, my mom’s mom, who was a nurse for over forty years. I would hear all her stories about the emergency room, different children she had as patients, or even when she was one of the nurses who worked in the helicopters. I was always so fascinated that she got to experience all these things while she was caring for others. This started my spark in interest for wanting to pursue a career in nursing.

I have always loved to learn; I never once didn’t want to go to school or try something new. Consistently my favorite subject throughout my learning career has been science. There is something just so amazing about knowing there is a distinct answer to a problem. I love having to work hard to find out what is wrong, knowing that there is evidence to back up my answer. There is always an explanation. This correlates well with nursing, especially trying to figure out what might be wrong with a patient based on their symptoms given. I can be confident helping with a diagnosis and caring for a patient knowing that the science behind the disease will help me confirm what care is required. You truly have to have a strong work ethic when working in a field of science or working in the Healthcare field. I have always been able to work well under pressure, without complaining. This is another reason I believe nursing would be a great fit.

It is not easy to become a nurse, you must be well-educated and well-rounded. I never doubted myself going to college. I’ve craved a higher education at a very young age. Once again, I love to learn. I knew college was going to open doors for me by earning a degree, specifically a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I would also be able to meet my lifelong friends and start my journey of independence as a young adult. I will never regret my decision to pursue a higher education, it will only benefit me in the end. Luckily, I am very fortunate to attend college and better myself.

When interviewing my partner, we both had similar desires to go into the medical field and our love for science as a whole. I want to specialize in Operating Room Nursing, CNOR. My partner however is very interested in working with athletes/sports in general because he himself is an athlete (tennis player). He finds it fascinating how players can be severely injured but bounce back months later and jump back into the game. I think if we both end up with jobs in the medical field, we will make a great impact.
